Visit These 3 Spooky Spots in Denton This Halloween
With summer temperatures finally winding down, October couldn’t have come soon enough. Fall is upon us, and with it comes beautiful sunsets, colorful leaves, traditions, and enjoying the outdoors.
Denton is truly a beautiful sight to behold in the month of October, with many neat spots to check out. With over 2,000 acres of forests and prairies, the Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center in Denton is the ideal place to enjoy a good hike.
However, more than anything else, October means Halloween, and Halloween is a time where kids and adults can both bond over putting costumes together, decorating the house, and eating loads of candy!
Halloween in Denton is a time to reflect on the city’s vast history of hauntings. That’s right — Denton has some of the most unique haunted spots in all of Texas.
And guess who’s here to give you a haunted tour — Chrissy the #DentonRealtor!
In this post, you’ll learn about 3 of Denton’s most haunted places. Get your flashlights ready!
Bayless-Selby House
The Bayless-Selby house is a treasure trove when it comes to Denton history. It’s actually a Victorian-era museum. It was originally owned by a man named J.M. Blount.
J.M.Blount was considered the first “Dentonite” who owned a general store and was even a county judge. The house was originally located at 1301 Myrtle street (but was then moved to the Denton County Historical Park). In 1894, the Bayless family, headed by Samule Bayless, moved in.
At the time, that part of town was considered the “elite” area. This area took up about 5 blocks on Sand Street, which is now Elm Street.
The 10-acre property (including a farmhouse) was purchased for a whopping $800. Maybe if Chrissy the #DentonRealtor was around they would have gotten an even better deal!
The 2-story Queen Anne Victorian Style House was built in 1898. This project cost $1,500 dollars and gave the house electricity and indoor plumbing.
There was a man by the name of Joe Spears who ended up living on the Bayless property — he was a sharecropper. Mr. Spears was allowed to grow on his land provided he gave Mr. Bayless half of his earnings.
Mr. Bayless was a straight shooter and didn’t want any funny business.
That’s when tragedy struck…
It was on November 22, 1919 that Mr. Bayless met his early demise at the hands of Mr. Spears. According to local lore, that’s when the haunting began.
Over the years, there have been reports of spooky activity going on at the house. Perhaps the ghost of Samuel Bayless is watching over the house to make sure it’s taken care of!
You can take a tour of the house yourself, but be warned — you may just hear or see something spooky that will haunt you for the rest of your days!
The Parker House
The Parker House is a mortuary that has a dark history. It was owned by the Parker family, but tragedy quickly struck as Mr. and Mrs. Parker died in a fatal plane crash that left their daughter, Mary Parker, to run the mortuary on her own.
Running the mortuary was no easy task for Mary, and business began to dwindle quickly. She didn’t know what to do, so she began to explore, let’s say, much darker options.
There were many who met their demise at the hands of Mary in the Parker House.
It’s said that both Mary and victims of her heinous acts are still walking around the property, waiting to scare anyone who is brave enough to visit!
The Emily Fowler Public Library
Emily Fowler was a librarian who spent the majority of her life supporting all the public libraries in Denton.
Even though she died in 1971, her support continued.
That’s right — she’s been spotted by witnesses. These aren’t just any old witnesses either: these are people who actually knew Emily Fowler.
The talk of paranormal activity at the library got the attention of ghost hunters, who proceeded to visit the library. The result was recorded evidence of an actual haunting!
So if you have any library books that are overdue, I suggest you get them back as quickly as possible — or else!
There’s More to Explore
The 2 homes mentioned above are the scariest spots in all of Denton. However, there are other hauntings occurring at such places at UNT’s Bruce Hall and the Denton County Courthouse.
There’s plenty to see for you thrill seekers out there, but remember to take a friend!
