Football Spirit: DISD, Local Games, Tailgating, and UIL Rules on Gear
As the summer comes to an end, Denton’s favorite time of year is just getting started.
That’s right — football season!
Whether your children are involved in these games or not, you and the rest of Denton are ready for some football and everything that comes with it.
COVID-19 has seriously affected Texas and Denton. With self-quarantine, mask mandates, and working from home, Dentonites want things to get back to normal.
Friday night high school football games give us the escape (and fun!) we need to get a feeling of normalcy back in our lives.
And don’t you worry — Chrissy the #DentonRealtor is here to help you get into the Denton football spirit!
The two Denton high school football teams that you’ll definitely want to keep up with are the Denton Guyer Wildcats and the Denton Ryan Raiders, which I’ll get to in a moment.
In this post, we’ll talk about my new DISD partnership, local games, tailgating, UIL rules, and gear.
But first, a quick fun fact, my grandfather actually played for the Buffalo Bills so football is just in the roots. Check out more about football with the Mallouf’s in the latest It’s Chrissy video series.
So now back to the main event DISD partnership, local games, tailgating, UIL rules, and gear let’s jump in!
Your #DentonRealtor Partners with Denton ISD
Chrissy Mallouf is proud to announce her partnership with Denton ISD and the Denton Public School Foundation as a “Legacy” sponsor. This partnership will help provide scholarship funds to DISD students. The Foundation awards scholarships each May to graduating seniors who have applied through the application process – any senior is eligible to apply for one of the many scholarships available including specific majors, specific schools, rank in class, vocational, etc. This group of scholarships will be a huge addition to what the Foundation is already offering – and it will only grow with time!
“In my role as Executive Director for the Denton Public School Foundation, I am continually amazed at the generosity and support that comes from our community in support of DISD teachers and students. Supporting quality education for our students is a sure way to build a strong and quality community for our future.”, said Jackie Jackson, Foundation Executive Director.
About the Foundation
According to their website: The Denton Public School Foundation is a non-profit 501(C)(3) corporation founded for the purpose of raising and providing support for the teachers and students of Denton ISD. Monies raised are invested and distributed through a competitive grant and scholarship program. Since 1995, the Foundation has awarded nearly $3.5 million in grants-to-teachers, staff scholarships, and special program support to fund innovative classroom initiatives, advanced training, and graduate hours; and $1,414,548 in student scholarships to graduating Denton ISD seniors.
For more information about the Denton Public School Foundation visit their website— https://www.dentonisd.org/foundation. The Foundation is always looking for community members to get involved. Serve on a committee for events like Groundhog Day Gala, as a reviewer for student scholarship and teacher grant applications, setup an endowment or other type of funding through the Foundation to support a grant or scholarship and more.
Local Games
The Denton Guyer Wildcats football team is a force to be reckoned with. They have an unmatched discipline, and their practices can be summed up as “football choreography at its finest.”
Denton Guyer football is an institution, and they prepare and condition their future football players as well. That’s right — football players at both Harpool and Crownover middle schools are being molded into future Wildcats!
In 2020, the Wildcats had an 11-3 season, and they participated in the semifinals where they lost to Cedar Hill. Nevertheless, that’s an impressive winning season, and they will no doubt play even harder this year.
The other high school football team in Denton that you need to keep an eye on is the Denton Ryan Raiders. Winners of the 2020 5A-Div, the Raiders are not messing around when it comes to the 2021 high school football season.
And wouldn’t you know it — these two teams played each other earlier this month. Denton Guyer beat Denton Ryan 14-7 in overtime. If you caught it, you know that it was quite the game!
The Guyer Wildcats football schedule is as follows:
The Ryan Raiders’ football schedule is as follows:
Tailgating
Tailgating is the fun that happens before that game! Coming out to show support for your team, while letting everyone see the pride you take in being a fan, is something you just can’t miss.
Tailgating is a staple in high school football, especially around these parts!
So what makes for fun and safe tailgating? First, you want to make sure your food doesn’t spoil by putting it in a cooler with plenty of ice. This is where you’ll store any drinks that you bring, but make sure your meats are sealed up so as to not leak all over everything else in your cooler.
Everyone loves to grill while tailgating; however, make sure you keep the grill 6 feet away from your vehicle.
Remember, these games are supposed to be fun and about the young adults participating in them. So make sure you conduct yourself with good sportsmanship when it comes to the rival team!
A Quick Note on UIL Rules for Your Player’s Gear
If you’re the parent of one of these awesome young adults, you’ll want to be aware of some changes to the UIL rules on gear.
According to uiltexas.org:
“Players must be dressed in a way they can be identified, either by a number or their personal name during pre-game activities. Game Jerseys do not have to be worn, but players must be identifiable in the case there is an incident during pre-game activity.”
Updated Interpretation concerning Legal Knee Pads during competition — check out the video
Scrimmage Attire: “Scrimmages will be treated like a game from a uniform standpoint. No shorts will be allowed, and jersey numbers must be legal position numbers.”
